The Decision

Our decision, back in the Summer of 2005 was to do something worthwhile for charity. Whilst we sat supping cold beers outside a London pub, in the early evening sun, the cycle ride from London to Monte Carlo was a long long way away. It also looked rather easy!

We’d pedal through idilic French towns, stop off for a rustic lunch of bread, pate and cheese washed down with some chilled beer or fine local wine. We’d stop to challenge a bunch of old Frenchmen to a game of boule and eventually, after many many leisurely days of cycling, we would meander down the hills made famous by the Monaco Grand Prix, pull up outside a Le Grande Casino, get our bikes valet parked and wander inside to win a fortune on the tables, before retiring to our suites as the sun set over the Mediterranean sea. Perfect!

The Reality

Back in the Summer of 2005, it all seemed such a good idea. It also seemed such a long time away. No one considered that there would be hours and hours of training during the English winter. No one imagined that we would impose a nine day time limit and a 900+ mile route that crossed part of the Alps upon ourselves. But the planning continued, the training commenced and here we are, in Summer 2006, poised to start on our journey.

The Reasons
One in three of us will develop cancer at some point in our lives.
Today, 700 people in the UK will be told they have cancer
Cancer is still the cause of 26% of all deaths in the UK
Each of us have lost friends or family to this dreadful disease

How many reasons do we need to support the largest independent funder of cancer research in the UK?

Cancer Research UK’s vision is to bring the disease under control within two generations. Their research is already making a real difference to people’s lives and Cancer mortality rates have dropped by 15% over the last 10 years. They fund and support the work of over 3,000 scientists, doctors and nurses throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
